cooper island

so before i continue on with the party like it's 1983! series, i want to backtrack for a minute regarding the oh-so-important music thing, and what is (well, up until this weekend) my most elaborate playlist to date: cooper island.

a few years ago, a fellow music-loving co-worker and i were talking about about songs that you listen to over and over and over and OVER... you know, the ones where you'll keep hitting the repeat button as you’re simultaneously thinking, ok, only ONE more time. i don't want to ever get sick of this song. ever! but then of course you can't help yourself, and you'll listen to it over and over and over and OVER until yes, you do end up getting tired of it. that, or you've already found the next ‘favorite’.

so this conversation evolved into, “ok, so if you were stranded on a deserted island and could make just ONE CD to bring, what songs would be on there?” the only self-imposed rules to this assignment were: 1) just one song per band or artist and 2) it had to fit on an audio CD (1.2 hours.)

in looking at it now, i had forgotten how detailed it was and how much work i put into it. the front and back covers are albums/songs/bands that i wanted to represent that didn't make it to the cd. then the first inside gatefold is a little tia-personality-via-aquarian-stereotype-background info. then the next gatefold is why i like music so much, and how i narrowed down the songs. then all of THAT opens up to this HUGE poster, where i explained why these particular tracks made it to the island... lord. i think i spent about a week writing it, then i met mark in his office one sunday so we could put it all together.

so here it is. cooper island. enjoy.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

"the myth: aquarians are often painted as cold, robotic characters who have no heart and no passion. they are, we are told, entirely intellectual in their make up. like mr. spock, they can only think, they cannot feel. they are aloof, distant, uncaring. they are also reputed to be insanely eccentric. the truth: there’s no denying the eccentric bit, and aquarians are fiercely proud of their idiosyncrasies. in truth though, their disposition is the very antithesis of ambivalent. it’s because they are so inwardly vulnerable that they hide their feelings behind a mask of indifference. for much the same reason, aquarians are very sociable. they figure as long as they are discussing ideas rather than emotions, they will be able to distract others from the true intensity of their passionate hearts."

my friends and i joke about the fact that emotionally, i’ve pretty much always lived in a castle... one out in the middle of nowhere, drawbridge up, guards on duty, fire-breathing dragons...ok, ok, so it’s not that bad. (see? how aquarian of me. instead of immediately pouring my soul into this intro, i have to sidetrack you first.)

honestly, it’s a very safe place to reside, but i don’t always want to be “safe.” because feeling one way, yet presenting something entirely different, gets to be exhausting after a while. but sometimes crossing the gap between the castle and the outside world seems far too wide to think about, let alone attempt. so i guess it’s no surprise then that music has always been such a huge part of my life, and very often fills that void. it’s been my link, my release, and many times, my escape.

in some ways it’s more interesting to note what i left off of this cd rather than what i’ve put on it. i’ve obviously veered away from the ‘extremes’ of my moods: metallica (wretched day at work, angry stage of break up.) the smiths (wallowing endlessly in dark and cavernous mind space.) dj manny lehman (circuit world, the ultimate escape.)

so these had to be more than just favorites. they had to be songs you could listen to over and over, yet still love and/or relate to as much as you did that very first time. (and i’m pretty confident that limp bizkit’s “break stuff” is not one of those songs.)

(don’t fear) the reaper/blue oyster cult

i didn’t discover this song until fairly recently. i was too young when it was first released, and was never a big fan of 70’s rock in general. then a few years ago, i heard a cover version as the credits were rolling over the end of a movie. wow. right then and there it vaulted straight to the top of my list.

sympathy/goo goo dolls

i can completely relate to anything that johnny reznick writes; after eight or so albums it’s obvious that he and i live in the same conflicted state of mind. i love the simplicity of this song, but ultimately chose it because i feel like i could have written it. because i could hand these lyrics to someone i’ve known for ten years or ten minutes and say, “here, this is me. totally. thanks for coming to the castle."

i will follow/u2

1981. KROQ just went on the air, and when i tuned in that old-school dial to 106.7, this was the first song i heard. loved the song, loved the band, loved the station. this is also the same year that MTV launched, and both turned out to be a huge influence on my taste in music for many years.

heaven must be missing an angel/tavares

in my late twenties, my friend stephanie and i would go to the diamond club every saturday night, drink far too many vodka cranberries, and dance to disco music until 3am. hearing this song reminds me of one of my very best friends, and very best years, of my life.

good/better than ezra

funny that i put these songs next to each other, because on the rare saturday nights that we weren’t at the diamond club, steph and i were at dragonfly, a small bar/club way on the outskirts of hollywood. we usually only broke routine and went there because better than ezra was performing, back when they were just a struggling band from new orleans.

crackin’ rosie/neil diamond

my mom loooved this album, and i used to BEG her to play this song first. then we’d sing along at the top of our lungs, while dancing around in our oh-so-70’s living room, complete with navy blue shag carpet. (you know, the kind you had to rake instead of vacuum.) in fact, i can still belt this tune out and sound just like neil! but admittedly only when i’m surrounded by the safety and privacy of my car stereo.

alex chilton/the replacements

nothing truly deep and meaningful to say about this one, but it obviously made it to ‘the island’ for a reason.

reptile/the church

a completely intoxicating, beautiful, and mesmerizing song. the cd overall wasn’t very interesting (nor was the band for that matter) but this track is eternal.

sky high/jigsaw

this is one of those songs that you secretly love, but always forget about because you rarely ever hear it. and if/when you finally do, you’re usually around other people so you have to act cool and pretend like you’re not really listening. so when this song came on the radio recently, i was thankfully and finally alone. sweeeeet! which of course made me want to sing along, but since i haven’t heard it enough to do so, this resulted in the standard making up and/or ‘guessing-the-lyrics-as-you-go-along’ thing. (always very comical.) so this whole faux-singing episode resulted in me now being desperate to find out who the artist was, which was immediately followed by insane amounts of research to discover that it was… “jigsaw? WHO?!? how is it possible that i have NEVER ONCE heard of this band? are they from, like, iceland or something?”

reap the wild wind/ultravox

in high school, sneaking out of my house to go dancing on a school night was a pretty common occurrence. but don’t even ask me how we danced to songs like this, though i vaguely recall a lot of lip-synching and acting out the lyrics, a very popular “dance move” at the time. yikes.

just in time/tony bennett

love him.

spiderwebs/no doubt

gwen, gwen, gwen… i definitely want to be her in my next life. i absolutely love her voice; it’s beautiful, but has just enough of an edge. she’s feminine, but still totally kicks ass. obviously she’s gorgeous, but she’s not some generic by-product of the OC. and lyrically she’s an open book, but when she gets up on stage to perform, you forget all about her vulnerability and how deeply personal it is. she’s the coolest chick, ever.

rain in the summertime/the alarm

if you simply asked me, “do you like this song? what does it mean to you?” my answer would be “yes, and i have absolutely no idea.” however, when i hear it, instantly i feel as if i’m lying on my bed after high school, probably in one of my “moods”, when all i could deal with was writing in my diary and listening to KROQ. then this song would come on and make me really happy. for about five minutes.

livin’ on a prayer/bon jovi

i used to have a life-size poster of jon bon jovi in my bedroom. he was leaning against a brick wall in an alley, one foot up, big teased hair, ripped jeans and oh that smile … ok, stop laughing! i obviously wasn’t the only girl that thought he was hot. but hey, at least i actually liked his music too. i’ve seen them in concert six or seven times, but am always extra geeked out when they play this song.

but not tonight/depeche mode

this song almost makes me want to put down the drawbridge for good. almost.

on with the show/motley crue

i was clearly absorbed by KROQ music and silly dance songs up until late 1984, which is when i moved in with my dad, his wife, and her 14 year-old son, bill. bill was a total stoner, a royal pain in the ass, and a huge fan of “the crue.” he’d play this tape endlessly until it drove me insane, but apparently i was subliminally being brainwashed at the same time. because next thing you knew, soft cell was out and motley crue was in. my favorite band. lord. it was like jumping off of a cliff.

in between days/the cure

ok, at this point it’s obvious that i have a few common denominators going on: 1980-something? check. melodic and semi-depressing lyrics? check. lead singer who is either hot and/or has big hair and/or wears make up? check.

don’t change/inxs

oh brother. “please see notes on previous track”? how lame is that!?!?

the zephyr song/red hot chili peppers

when you’ve liked a band for 25 years, it’s exceptionally difficult to narrow it down to just one song, especially when that band created a new genre of music that was a fusion of so many others before it. but ultimately i chose this one because i think it best embodies the evolution of their style, even though truly i’m a fan of the old school chili peppers, when their albums sounded like demo-tapes.

moon river/henry mancini

remember when mr. big was about to move to napa, and he and carrie were slow dancing to this song in his empty apartment? sniff sniff. wait, i never cry. how did that happen!? maybe it was too much chardonnay. or maybe it’s because i don’t know if this song makes me utterly happy or completely depressed. either way, i love how dreamy the music is. also, anything that can get that deep into the castle is quite impressive, isn’t it?

a virtual vacation back in time (part one)

have you seen the movie total recall? the one where arnold schwarzenegger has been having weird dreams about a brunette woman that he's never met? then after seeing an ad from a company that sells imaginary adventures by implanting false memories, he decides to buy a “vacation” on mars from them, one in which he actually takes a vacation from himself by becoming a spy? have you seen that movie? well you should! yes, ok ~ it's just a little cheesy. but that doesn't mean that it isn't still totally rad. and if you haven't seen the movie, well, i guess that doesn't really matter either, now that i think about it. because as it turns out, it's not as linear of an explanation as i had hoped...

ha!

seriously, i think i just don't know where to even begin with the four million thoughts and subjects that are floating thru my pea brain right now... (((sigh))). ok, let's just start at the beginning:

for those of you who don't already know this, i have kept a journal since august of 1983. yes, 1983 ~ twenty six years (to the day, ironically enough.) i have periods of time when i'd have two, three, maybe four entries a day, but then there are a few stretches where i have two, three, maybe four years without anything. okay, that's not entirely true... there is only one 3.5 year gap ~ the exact 3.5 five years that i was going out with MT. (btw, i find that verrrry odd, because i sure had a lot of things on my mind during that time. yesirree.) tho then when i think about it some more, i realize that a majority of those thoughts would have gotten me in to A LOT of trouble. um, yah... i think you know where i'm going with this. anyway, getting way too sidetracked already...

my journal entries from high school are incredibly funny. first of all, i wrote in all lower case even way back then, but i dotted every "i" with a heart (which must have been quite time-consuming.) i also must have burned thru cases and cases of pink hello kitty pens. omg, i LOVED those pens! i also vaguelly recall the ink smelling like strawberries. however, what's even more entertaining than my choice in pens is the actual content. seriously, reading the entries from '83-'85 is downright HILARIOUS.

first of all, there was sooooo much drama. um, why? all we had to do was go to school for 35 hours a week. what was all of the damn drama about? oh wait... BOYS. lots and lots of boys. tho clearly i had the romantic attention span of a 3-year old, as witnessed by this little sampling:

mon: i heart scottie sooooooo much! but i also heart evan and steve. mike is being a jerk. jeff has a different spanish class now so i think that is over fer shure.
tue: mom is being a total rag!!! if she tries to ground me i'm like totally running away.
wed: ohhhhh shane is so cute. i'm like sooo going to marry him. tho i do still think eric is a total babe.
thu: sneaking out to go to 321 tonight! yay! but fuck! i wish we still had those wine coolers from lisa's party. oh well. hopefully todd will have black beauties.
fri: okay, i am sooooo over jim and his shit. i'm totally gonna shine him. then i'm going to transfer to calabassas so i can get a better boyfriend. one with a good car! maybe a white-on-white convertible rabbit. oh my god that would be so *rad*.

seriously f***ing hysterical.

so there you have the "girlie" side of it.

then there is the other side ~ the "dark side" ~ the part that is still very true as to who i am today. meaning the person who was far better at expressing emotions in writing than in conversation. the person who would appear very cool and calm to the outside world (well, ok, maybe not always), but on the inside was a hot mess. so i would then furiously journal in a desperate search for self-discovery, all in my efforts to try and figure out the meaning of life, the why-the-F-is-this-happening feeling, and the feeling that if i just found the right words i could totally figure it all out.

now add the music. ahhhh, the music! i couldn't even BEGIN to explain that, tho if you're a 'music person' you'll probably understand. (i have had some amazing connections with people over this subject, but more on that later.) on the other hand, i realize that there are plenty of people who just listen to whatever is on the radio, maybe buy a few cd's once in a while, never know who sings what... needless to say, i can not relate to that in the least.

i have 5,000+ songs in my itunes, and that probably only covers half of the music that i own. i have ginormous binders holding all of my cd's and liner notes (in alphabetical order, of course). and one of my absolute favorite things to do is make playlists for friends, either to introduce them to a new genre of music, or better yet, to give them tracks that i already know they are going to totally dig. so then add my freakish rainman quality of being able to remember names/ songs/ lyrics/ dates to all of the above, and you pretty much get the jist of it.

btw, there is something profound ~ very profound ~ that goes on internally when i hear certain songs. i am immediately transported back to that exact point in time, and can immediately recall where i was, who i was with, what i was thinking, how i was feeling, and probably even what i was wearing. it's f***ing crazy, it really is. but this is especially true when it comes to 80's music ~ you know, flashback kroq kind of stuff: soft cell, psychedelic furs, new order, adam & the ants, joy division, echo & the bunnymen, alterered images, suburban lawns... i mean, only ten seconds into the song and i've already time-traveled back to being 17 again.

i often wonder, why this is? is everyone this weird? tho after thinking about it a lot these past few days, my best guess is that i had (have?) no clue as to how to convey my thoughts and emotions to other people. but then i'd hear a depeche mode song and think, "omg, dave gahan just TOTALLY said what i want to say! he is amazing and brilliant! and psychic! i mean, how is it that he knows EXACTLY what i'm feeling? how is that possible? ugh! why can't i express myself like that, dammit?!" yah, welcome to my brain. and this probably explains why i'd spend every single cent i had on music. i loved going to penny lane and buying obsure 12" remixes and imported singles. i had hundreds and hundreds of albums. it also probably explains why i'd then lie on my bed every day after school, writing in my journal, not doing my homework, and listening to the same song fifty times in a row... seriously, so much so that my mom would yell thru my locked door, "ok missy! if you play that song one more time i'm going to yank that godamn record player right out of the wall!"

so yah, that's pretty much where the 80's have remained~ in my journal, in my music, and really just in my mind. it's almost like i dreamt the whole thing and didn't really live it. but in just these past few weeks, that whole period of my life has come back an alarming pace. and now (for the first time ever, i think) i'm realizing that no, that was not just one really long dream and that yes, it was actually happening in real life.

omfg, i feel like i'm in a movie. it's so bizarre! it's crazy. i'm crazy. all resulting in my virtual vacation. and this reallllllly long blog entry.

*whew*

so now that you know the background, stay tuned for the installments. because each one (and each person) definitely warrants it's own entry. i also know that if i wrote any more in this one you'd be fast asleep.

well, if you aren't already, that is. :)

holla!

yes, i'm alive!
and woefully ~ and quite obviously ~ behind in my blogging.
and now i have like fifty things i want to talk about.
and mad men starts tonight.
and project runway starts thursday.
and now there is a project runway spinoff called models of the runway that airs immediately after. and i can already tell that's going to be totally blog-worthy.
and i know that's really what ya'll want to read about anyway: reality tely, not the personal s***.
well, too bad!
HA!

summer camp in a nutshell

9:15am ~ alarm goes off. both roomies groan that this is wayyyyy too early and that sleep is much more important.
9:20 ~ need for food overrides need for sleep. get up!
9:40 ~ first person down (usually t$) gets towels from the towel nazi and sets up camp by the pool. (for some reason we always choose a different place on each trip, but wherever we set up headquarters that first day ends up being the spot for the week.)
9:59 ~ breakfast. time to carbo load on raisin bran and bagels.
10:30 ~ assume the position! this means setting up the correct tanning angle (usually t$).
10:45 ~ group consensus that there will be NO DRINKING until after lunch.
10:47 ~ the first "who wants a mimosa?" is heard (usually t$), followed immediately by three "i do!'s"
10:50-noon ~ mimosa consumption as we post-mortem the previous nights festivities and (usually poor) alcohol-induced decisions. the first batch of nicknames is assigned.
12:00 ~ aqua gym! jdp (geek) always participates, monster = sometimes, bonnie = never. t$ brings out zoom lens and shoots the hot G.O. leading it.
12:25 ~ crazy signs! jdp & bonnie (geeks) always participate, monster = sometimes, t$ = never. instead, t$ continues to use zoom lens to scope out hot G.O.'s leading it.
12:30 ~ lunch. time to carbo load on white chocolate bread and pasta, and consume first bottle of wine for the day.
1:00 ~ back to the pool.
1:05 ~ the first "who wants a turks lemonade?" is heard (usually t$), followed immediately by three "i do!'s"
2:30-3:00 ~ time to move down to la playa, which means a quick trip to the bano and another round of beverages for the transition.
3:00-5:30 ~ the beach. depending on blood alcohol level, this time will either be spent 1) frolicking in the water or 2) passed out on the lounge chair.
5:30 ~ sharkies bar. time for french fries, chicken wraps and another round of cocktails.
6:00 ~ the quitters go back to their rooms to take naps, while the professionals keep it going with the booze.
7:30 ~ get up (quitters) or go home (boozers). it's time to shower.
8:45 ~ meet at bar for traditional glass of fine cham-pag-nah.
9:00 (until as late as you can tolerate sitting on those chairs) ~ dinner. so in addition to trying to miss as much of the show as possible, the goal is to try and scare off the rest of the people at the table. if we don't, that means that we have just met our new best friends for the week.
10:00-11:00 ~ mosey back out to the bar area. order fine cham-pag-nah (jdp) and vodka "hey can you make those a double?" sodas (two headed monster). ask bonnie if she wants anything, even tho you already know that the answer is "no." make fun of totally lame 4th grade play trying to be passed off as "entertainment." complain about lack of hot boys. judge everyone else. decide that we are, without a doubt, the coolest & "most funnest" people there.
11:00 ~ crazy signs round II. jdp & bonnie (geeks) always participate, monster = sometimes, t$ = never. instead, t$ checks out the hot G.O.'s leading it and decides if any are on her list.
11:15 ~ the first "who wants a shot?" is heard (usually t$), followed immediately by many "i do!'s"
11:30-1:00/2:00/3:00am ~ drink, dance, more drinking, more dancing, take 47 pictures (with immediate review, always) until you either 1) hook up or 2) pass out.
1:00/2:00/3:00am ~ go to bed (works for both options 1 & 2 above).
9:15 ~ alarm goes off. wake up. repeat. multiply by eight days.

after 8th day (if not before), swear that you are totally over it and never going back again. arrive home, post pictures on facebook, remember how much fun it really was after all, treat bronchitis and/or eye herpes, look up prices for october, then immediately decide that you need to go back asap.

until next time, beloved turkoise...

the biggest loser, part II

well i don't know if this makes me a loser or just a tranny-loving fag hag with excellent taste, but i really think that nina flowers should have won rupaul's drag race. nina is wicked fierce! but the person that won just looks like an ugly version of rupaul. *bleck*. so i'm not going to post her fug-ass picture here.

ps: nina lives in denver. i bet she's a huge elway fan!

the biggest loser

so i'm on my way home last night at around 8:something (which is super early as of late, because work has been extra shiteous but that's a whole other post), and i was thinking
oh yay! the biggest loser is on tonight! at that point i decided that leaving work this early ~ PLUS the two hour television extravaganza ~ warranted a trip to the grocery store. i thought i'd celebrate by having my favorite dinner of baked ruffles, onion dip and red vines.

tho once i was in my pj's and big socks, settled in on my couch, surrounded by all of my treats, the irony of the whole thing kind of dawned on me... ooooh, wait a minute. i get it now. the biggest loser isn't a show about weight loss, it's the story of my life. this is about me. ME. omg, i'm the biggest loser. look at me! yes i am a loser. i totally am! this is PATHETIC. i am pathetic!

i can't believe this is my life. (have i written about this before? probably. but i'm too lazy to figure it out.) but anyway, yes ~ because now utmost happiness equals really bad processed food and somewhat scary network tv?!?!?

like i said: pathetic.

as our friend ryan said to jdp in turks, "um, i think you could have tried a little harder." well i think that should be my new mantra. i think i need to try a little harder. or actually, just try. i'm clearly not making a whole lot of effort here to improve my quality of life. you know, in case that wasn't already evident.

and speaking of other people who also maybe need to get a life (or perhaps they're just running our of websites to surf)... i actually got a COMPLAINT from two (out of my eight) readers, mc and hb: "hey tee, when are you gonna post something new? we've been looking at that boy for months!!" of course it had been so long i couldn't even remember who they were talking about.

ha ha! and you thought that you were sick of looking at jay? well tell me how you feel after two months looking at this fella... :D

love at first sight

um, HELLO... jay

tho, eh, now i have to explain why i TiVo'd "the city", that craptastic spin off of a spin off about some girl from the hills, who's personality is equivalent to a soggy bowl of cereal. (because i think we all know that the hills is bad enough! *bleck*!) but what can i say? it was just too depressing coming home each night and having nothing new on the playlist, so desperate times call for desperate measures, as they say...

anyhoo, at least this isn't considered "reality tv". hello no, not in my book! because all you had to do was watch the first five minutes, when whitney was talking to olivia in one of the most PAINFULLY staged "reality tv show" conversations that i have EVER had to sit thru. omfg, i thought, i have to turn this shiteous show off RIGHT NOW... ooooooh but wait. wait. who is that boy that whitney is meeting at the cafe? wow, talk about TMT (totally my type). and then, he speaks... with an australian accent.

ok, i'm done. i'm officially in hearts. which unfortunately means that i now feel compelled to continue to watch this piece of shit just for scenes with jay.

lord help me jesus.
